The Story of Cinderella
The Nursery Rhyme Little Polly Flinders is often compared to the Fairy Tale of Cinderella which was written by the Brothers Grimm. Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm was born in Hanau, Germany on January 4th 1785 and his brother Wilhelm Carl Grimm was born on February 24th 1786. The Grimms' collection of folktales was published by Kinder and Hausmarchen (1812-1815). Little Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders,
Warming her pretty little toes.

Mother came and caught her,
And whipped her little daughter
For spoiling her nice new clothes.

(Girls were often whipped into obedience and a 'whipping stool' was used for this purpose. It is believed that the tragic Lady Jane Grey received punishment via the whipping stool)
