This old children's nursery rhyme 'Handy spandy Jack-a-dandy' has no specific association but riddicules those considered to be a fop or a dandy - a man who makes a habit of overdressing, putting on airs and aspiring to be an aristocrat. The word dandy appears in the English language in about 1780 during the Regency period of English history. The most famous dandy of them all was Beau Brummell (1778-1840) who was a courtier of the Prince Regent who became King George IV (1762 - 1830). Beau Brummell enjoyed high living and fine clothes and was credited with having set the fashion for trousers rather than breeches. He overspent and fled from his creditors to France where he died in poverty in a lunatic asylum. |
